Town & Country-week 8

By Cameron Noakes

REIGNING premier Seymour’s pride copped a dint when it was upset by Echuca on the weekend in the Goulburn Valley Football League.

Seymour is playing for its third consecutive flag but it was stunned in the second half when Echuca rattled on 11 goals and restricted the Lions to just three.

The 49-point loss cost Seymour second place on the ladder and it now sits behind the Shepparton Swans and the undefeated Shepparton United.

The Shepparton Swans spanked the winless Kyabram on Saturday, keeping the bottom team goalless in the first half to win by 144 points.

But the Swans are facing an administration problem and the possibility of having some of their premiership points taken from them due to a contract dispute with VFL club Port Melbourne over former Port Adelaide player Tim Looby.

Looby continues to play for the Swans despite Port Melbourne officials saying he is listed with their club. The Swans will learn their fate this week when they meet with Football Victoria but they face the prospect of tumbling down the ladder.

Matt Forys booted nine goals in Shepparton United 67-point win over Rochester and Scott Grainger bagged ten to help fourth-placed Euroa maul second-bottom Tatura, 26.22 (178) to 8.3 (51).

The Victorian Country Interleague Championships have been a huge success this year with another big crowd turning up at Skilled Stadium to watch the double-header between the Bellarine and the Yarra Valley Mountain District Football League followed by the clash between the Geelong League and the Hampden League.

Bellarine was able to keep its nose in front of a star-studded YVMDFL to win by three points, despite YVMDFL booting four goals into the breeze in the final term.
And the Geelong Football League managed to hit the front in the final minutes to record a 14-point win against Hampden, 10.12 (72) to 9.4 (58).

The final game of the championship is on tomorrow night when the Bendigo Football League clashes with the Ballarat Football League at the Queen Elizabeth Oval in Bendigo.

In the Southern Football League, St.Kilda City tops the ladder and is undefeated after six rounds.
The Saints smashed Chelsea Heights on the weekend by 89 points with Daniel Casset bagging 11 goals.

Last year’s runner-up St.Paul’s East Bentleigh is second following its 55-point win against Highett and Cheltenham is third after smashing Mordialloc by 93 points.

Defending premier Clayton is fourth after its 20-point win against Tooronga-Malvern and Highett rounds out the five.

In the Essendon District Football League, Glen Hakim bagged 13 goals in Greenvale’s big win against Craigieburn, 31.18 (204) to 2.6 (18).

Greenvale is undefeated so far but is still second behind Strathmore after the reigning premier’s 48-point win against Doutta Stars on Saturday.
