OLD Ivanhoe has moved into the top four after stealing the points in an epic encounter against the University Blues in round eight of A-section in the Victorian Amateur Football Association.
After a blistering 20 minutes in the third term, Old Ivanhoe came back from a 23-point deficit at half time but failed to put the Blues to the sword and could only manage a one-point lead at the final break.
In the final term, the Hoers and the Blues went goal for goal and it looked the visitors would win when Blues forward George Decrespigny scored his fourth of the day to give his team a four-point lead with just minutes to go.
But Old Ivanhoe was able to put its nose in front when Chris Sutherland scored at the 28 minute mark to eventually win 16.14 (110) to 16.13 (109).
Last year’s B-section premier, Collegians, is still on top after it defeated Old Scotch by 15 points, 12.16 (88) to 10.13 (73).
And Old Brighton (also up from B-section) is holding on to second spot after another convincing performance against St.Bernard’s, winning 18.12 (120) to 14.3 (87).
Old Xaverians flattened De La Salle by 58 points to hang on to third spot and reigning premier Old Haileybury is still winless and on the bottom after it was rolled by Old Trinity by 40 points.
It was another tough loss for the Bloods who booted six goals to one in the first term, only, once again, to capitulate in the latter stages of the game.
Old Haileybury is almost certain to become the first A-section reigning premier to be relegated since 1979, when premier Old Scotch was dropped to B-section.
In the Peninsula division of the Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League, Seaford coughed up top spot when it dropped its first game of the season in a thrilling encounter against Edithvale-Aspendale.
Edithvale-Aspendale, third on the ladder, trailed early but worked its way to the front by half-time and was able to hang on for a five-point win, despite being outscored in the final quarter.
Frankston YCW has moved into top spot after enjoying a 41-point win against Bonbeach, 14.8 (92) to 6.5 (41).
And former St.Kilda star Justin Peckett’s Karingal is currently fifth after his team blew reigning premier Chelsea out of the water. Karingal had 13 goal-scorers in the 56-point victory, winning 21.9 (135) to 12.7 (79).
