Trailing from the on set Boisdale worked hard all day to stay within reach of reigning premier Heyfield.
Working their way back into the match in the third term the Bombers had their opportunities to hit the lead but squandered a number of easy chances at goal. Aaron Carr missing the first of four missed opportunities for the term followed by Winston Gieschen. The younger Gieschen’s shot at goal hitting the middle of the goal post as the Bombers worked hard to manufacture something special. Boisdale had their chances a snap at goal by Andrew Gieschen bounced through for a behind the third minor score for the Bombers, before a much needed coaches goal brought the margin back to two straight kicks. A shot at goal by Carr brushed across the face of the sticks into the waiting hands of Andrew Gieschen, the coach with his second in as many minutes. Yet to open their account for the term the Roos steadily moved the ball forward. A high leap to Lyell Berry spoiled the ball with Heyfield scoring from the best on grounds efforts. Each time the Bombers looked to reel in Heyfield’s lead and challenge the premiers, the Roos dug deep to find something special. Heyfield quickly followed up with another through Nick Anderson, while Neil Morris and Nick Dowse missed opportunities to extend the lead on the three quarter siren 110.10 (76) to 7.13 (55). Gieschen continued his dominance after the break, a mid air snap at goal in the goal square put the Bombers on the front foot. Dominating play Gieschen was making his presence felt around the ground the big man combining with Winston Gieschen in front of goal. Winston’s shot spraying the face of goal. He quickly redeemed himself a strong mark from a wayward kick off the pack in Boisdales forward line seeing the Bomber put the home side within four points of the Roos. Working hard from defence the Bombers overturned the ball, Heyfield quick to pounce moving forward to register their only score for the term. Under immense pressure Heyfield’s defence were happy to concede a minor score, Nick Dowse running the ball through the posts as he felt the pressure of Boisdales forwards hot on his heels. Unable to clear the backline the Roos made a mess of it a kick out on the full giving Boisdale a sniff of victory as the clock counted down. Tight on the boundary in the pocket, Boisdales long penetrating shot at goal put the Bombers in front for the first time by a mere two points. Both sides worked hard to gain possession at the centre bounce, Heyfield breaking clear to work their way wide along the wing towards the forward 50. A strong mark by William Kelly in the forward line saw the unlikely hero outside of scoring distance as the siren sounded. Kelly’s shot at goal falling short of the line as the Bombers come from behind to steal victory in a two point thriller, 10.19 (79) to 11.11 (77). Boisdales Lee Forsyth was named best on ground, with Andrew Gieschen instrumental in turning his sides fortunes around in the final term among the Bombers best finishing the day with three. TTU sealed their second won of the season in as many weeks with a 10 goal win over Woodside in an impressive display of football, 18.11 (119) to 8.11 (59). Evenly matched for three quarters of the match the Bombers blitzed the Wildcats with an eight goal to nil final term. Nick Turnball the catalyst in the forward line adding five to his season tally of 15. Turnball ably assisted by Michael Hall who finished the match with four, the pair two of nine individual goal scorers for the Bombers. Anthony Janssen and Brett Pace impressed for the visitors while coach Adrian Seccull was the pick of the goal kickers booting four. It was a one man show at Gaskin Park as Churchill’s Nathan McDonald ran rampant in the forward line booting a bag of 10 in a goal kicking exhibition. Bursting out of the blocks Churchill broke away to a four goal lead at the first change which they extended to 47 points at the main change. Stratford’s defence was beyond stretched as McDonald teamed with Nicolaus Campbell on numerous occasions in the forward 50. Campbell instrumental in setting up scoring options or scoring one of his three as the Cougars boasted too much strength around the ground. Stratford’s Marty McDonough and Chris Camm were named among the sides best as they worked hard to make the most of limited scoring options for the Swans, Camm the sole multiple goal scorer with two. The Blues turned a three goal deficit at three quarter time into a seven point victory in a classic tussle at Rosedale. Trailing for the majority of the match the Blues appeared down and out at the final change in ends before the side dug deep in a courageous display of football. Rebounding strongly from their first defeat of the season Glengarry hit their straps in the second quarter with a five goal term, the Pies taking a 14 point lead into half time. An even third term saw the sides respond to one another’s challenge on the scoreboard, the two teams kicking four majors for the term as Glengarry continued to build on their handy lead. The tables were turned when the sides broke from the three quarter huddle, Rosedale bursting out of the blocks forward Ben Macreadie and Adam Mitchell among the action early. Macreadie scoring one of his four for the day as signs began to look ominous for the Blues. Best on ground Michael Black continued to tally plenty of possessions, while Darryl Mayman continued to work hard restricting the Pies scoring options. Beginning to show signs of fatigue after last weeks physical top of the table encounter the Pies ran out of legs as the Blues kept at them outscoring the visitors seven goals to three to snatch victory, 15.9 (99) to 14.8 (92). Ladder leaders Gormandale kept their winning run in tack handing Cowwarr a 65 point thumping. Restricting the Saints to a mere 1.8 (14) to half time, the game was all but over at the long break as the Tigers began to flex their goal kicking muscle. Daniel Trease for the second week running was the Tigers leading goal kicker with four. Paul Fabris, Simon Quail and Trease a formidable forward combination as the trio lead from the front in the second half as the visitors piled on 10 goals to eight. The Saints found their way in the second half with a competitive period of football lead by best on ground Chris Stasinowsky. By Lauren Carey |
