Blighty succumbed to a Jerilderie blitz after half time last week and will be keen to atone. Berrigan meanwhile have shown each week that they are no pushover and will enter this match with confidence.
Key Players: Blighty: Paul Scoullar, Mick Norman, Matt Wooden Berrigan: Matt Gorman, Dale Alderton, Tim Cooper Selection: With one win each and less than a percentage point separating these teams on the ladder, this should be a close and enthralling contest. Berrigan have quickly established a reputation for dogged performances & will throw everything at Blighty. It’s turned into a cliché, but the key to the game will be Blighty big man Paul Scoullar & his presence alone may lean us towards a Blighty victory. Don’t have the house on it, but select Blighty to win by 3 points Stathmerton v Jerilderie Jerilderie had a great win last week and will travel to old Murray League playground Strathmerton with plenty of confidence. Strathy handed close neighbour Yarroweyah a belting last week and following their win the week before against Deni Rovers, they’ll be expecting a win at home Key Players Strathy: Drew Shadbolt, Jamie Pitt, Andrew Taylor Jerilderie: Tom Bryce, Aaron Purcell, Stuart Way Selection: Strathy’s ability to combat Jerilderie’s height advantage may be the key to this game. Andrew Taylor for the Dogs plays tall and he will be important and Strathy will hope key defender Brunskill returns from a hamstring injury. Strathy will expect to win, especially at home & if they’re on their game they may just have too much scoring firepower for the Dees to cover. Strathy by 13 points Katamatite v Yarroweyah Katy can take confidence from running Rovers for 3 quarters last week & always give a good account of themselves. The young Hoppers come off a big loss last week and will be keen to bounce back & get itself in a position to pinch it’s first win. Key Players Katy: Tom Ross, Daniel Bye, Jeff Younger Yarroweyah: Keegan Oliver, Chris Cheong, Brendan Cowcher Selection: A chance for both teams too open their seasons’ account. If the Tigers maintain their form from the first 3 quarters of last weeks’ game, they should be well on the way to winning. The Hoppers are young and talented but may find they’re out muscled by the more experienced Katamatite line up. Katy haven’t been too far away and should have their first win here. Katy by 5 goals Wunghnu v Deni Rovers Deni Rovers struggled to shrug off Katy last week before a last quarter demolition put the game beyond doubt while the Maggies again battled gamely against one of the comp’s top side in Katandra. Key Players Wunghnu: Daniel Clarke, Mark Betson, Shannon Anderson Deni Rovers: Benji Hardman, Gerard Robinson, Brad Todd Selection: Hard too see Wunghnu toppling the strong Rovers line up however the Maggies will be keen to make sure it’s in the game for a long way. Rovers have multiple options up forward and this is where they may overwhelm the Maggies after half time. Admire Wunghnu for their ‘never say die’ attitude, however the Rovers should win well. Deni Rovers by 9 goals. Shepp East v Katandra The Kats led by 12 goals from tall forward Cam Dudgeon had a good win last week while Shepp East were overwhelmed by a strong Tungamah combination. Katandra remain undefeated while the Eagles are yet too open their account. Key Players SE: Chris Burke, Scott Turner, Bryden Power Kats: Cam Dudgeon, Shane Venebles, Derek Hall Selection: The Kats were great last week and look to be improving a little bit each week & with Lawless, Dudgeon, Venebles & Ray Ireland all in form, they look like they’ll take some beating. Shepp East retain the nucleus of a handy side & their draw has provided them with the hardest possible season opening. The early season pain may continue here for the Eagles with Katandra favoured to be too strong. Kats by 21 points. Waaia v Tungamah Tungamah has taken all before it so far this season and gets a further test here against a hard running Waaia side. The Bears held off Shepp East last week for an impressive win while Waaia were gallant in defeat against Dookie Utd. Key Players Waaia: Sam Richardson, Nick Tyack, Rob Bradbury Tungamah: Duane Haebich, Chris Powell, Travis Betson Selection: Another great game expected with these sides in top form and possessing star studded line ups. Tungamah have been great thus far and will take some topping. They have clever players around goal and a hard rebounding backline that sets up many scoring opportunities. Likewise, Waaia have avenues to goal & running players too burn. Despite losing last week, Waaia were impressive and while Tungamah have done nothing wrong, maybe Waaia have too many guns for the Bears to hold down. Tungamah have stamped themselves a finals participant but we just feel Waaia, at home, May get the points. Waaia by 4 points Dookie Utd v Mathoura The reigning premiers won an epic battle against contenders Waaia last week proving they are well on track in their title defence. The Timbercutters battled against Katunga and will have to hold on for dear life in this game. Key Players DU: Cam Ross, Brendan Briggs, Leigh Hepner Mathoura: Tim Sparey, Ash Neal, Callum Harding-Davies Selection: Although injuries to coach Dale Osborne & Shane Weatherley will make Dookie Utd’s task harder, it’s hard to see them faltering here. Chris Payne-Croston is in fine form as are the on ball brigade of Luke Le Broq, & Brendan Briggs & ruckman Cam Ross. Mathoura will plug away but won’t be able to cover all DU’s big guns and while the Timbercutters will always give their all, Dookie Utd should win easily. Utd by 8 goals. Picola Utd v Katunga Picola Utd were pushed all the way by Berrigan last week and will be pleased to have come away with a win and are undefeated. They take on in form Katunga who sit atop the ladder & are also undefeated. Key Players Picola Utd: John Walker, Dave Daniel, Scott Baxter Katunga: Nick Howden, Boden Carkeek, Jason Cassimaty Selection This will be a great game between two of the five undefeated teams at the top of the ladder. The key to the game is Swan forward Nick Howden who is in great touch & is almost impossible to hold down for an entire game. While the Swans are far from a one man band, if Picola Utd can at least limit his output they will be well on the way to victory. Two hard running midfields go head to head and tough footy is to be expected on the tight Picola ground. Perhaps Katunga have too many scoring options for the Blues to cover and this leans selection to the Swans. Katunga by 17 points By Larry Ryan |
