Kangaroo Flat secured a second semi final berth after defeating arch
rival Sandhurst by seven goals in Saturday night’s qualifying final.
A GRADE – SANDHURST V KANGAROO FLAT (16-23) Goals were at a premium in what undoubtedly would be one of the lowest scoring finals of Bendigo Football Netball League history. Sandhurst scored quickly on its first centre pass but then it took eight minutes for Kangaroo Flat to respond. Neither of the teams’ goalers adjusted easily to the torrid weather conditions and at the quarter break Sandhurst led 3 – 2. In the second quarter both teams had plenty of opportunities to improve on the scoreboard. Sandhurst struggled in its attacking third restricted by Kangaroo Flat’s dogged defenders who took possession on rebounds and were amply rewarded, with Brooke Emmerson’s long shots at goal a highlight. A penalty goal after the siren had Kangaroo Flat with a 3-goal lead at the long break. Sarah Fern and Rebecca Hynes were included into Kangaroo Flat’s attack for the second half of play. Kangaroo Flat chose to continue with the shorter pass option in the mid court which paid dividends and with Hynes’ final quarter 6-goal blitz stormed home winners. Kangaroo Flat will play Golden Square in the second semi final. A RESERVE – KANGAROO FLAT V GOLDEN SQUARE (27-25) The A Reserve game lived up to all expectations with the score seesawing in favour of both teams until the third quarter break when it was locked on 20-20. Kangaroo Flat’s defenders were too tall in the goal circle and took all rebounds. Kate Stevens’ work rate was second to none as she created much of the attacking play. Though Golden Square’s defence led by Tara O’Toole constantly applied pressure, Flat’s goal shooters were too accurate. A superb long shot at goal by Sam Hommelhoff paid dividends and Kangaroo Flat snatched a 2-goal lead late in the final term. Kangaroo Flat will play Sandhurst in the second semi final. B GRADE – GOLDEN SQUARE V GISBORNE (37-18) Golden Square’s options in attack proved overwhelming for Gisborne. Megan Baird and Ashleigh Weeks combined superbly in the goal circle setting up a handy 5-goal lead at half-time. Claire Herbert’s impact on the game in the second half was noticeable scoring 12 goals stretching the margin even further. Though Gisborne made positional changes throughout the game it was unable to stem the flow and Golden Square won by 19 goals. Golden Square will play the undefeated Kangaroo Flat in the second semi final. 17 & UNDER – GOLDEN SQUARE V KANGAROO FLAT (40-33) A slow starting Golden Square overcame a determined Kangaroo Flat outfit for the right to play Sandhurst in the second semi final. It took until eleven minutes into the second quarter before Golden Square could wrest the lead from Kangaroo Flat. Square’s Rhiannon Judd played a significant role in defence capitalising on the Flat’s missed opportunities. With the aide of Katie McDonald-Whelan, who controlled much of Square’s mid court play, Golden Square enjoyed a comfortable 7-goal win. By Kylie Ellis |
