Lexton Plains FL - Preliminary Finals Review Print E-mail
Loddon Valley FLSkipton has ended Rokewood-Corindhap’s season, and will once again face up to Carngham-Linton in Saturday’s RegionalOne Lexton Plains Football League Grand final at Learmonth.

In a low scoring fight to the death, the Emus prevailed by just one goal, 4.7 (31) to 3.7 (25) at Ararat.

And they may go into battle  Saturday without the services of coach Tim McKay who was reported during the second term.

It was heartache again for the Grasshoppers, who finished on top, but failed to win a finals match after going through the season with 15 wins and a draw.

Rain fell for the whole match, with few skills being able to be displayed.

Rokewood-Corindhap lost centreman Zac Fulford in the opening term, missing his drive forward.

But the forwards of both teams had a torrid time of things as the ball was unable to be delivered to them with any precision.

Just one goal (to Skipton’s Graeme Lench) in the first term led to a goalless second term, with the Emus leading by a goal.

And the way things were going, it looked like a winning break.

However, Rokewood-Corindhap was not done, as it finally broke its duck with a Tom Blackford set shot.

Things were back on an even keel, with four more goals rounding out the term – two to each team.

Free kicks to Kiernan Molloy and McKay led to Skipton’s majors, while the Grasshoppers fought hard to register a long goal to James McNamee and Gerard Watt.

Things were level going into the final term.

For a large part of the term, it looked like the game was going to go into extra time, as no one could break the dead lock.

After 13 minutes it was finally snapped with a behind to the Emus which was followed up four minutes later with McKay’s second goal.

In the final minute, McNamee had a chance to level things up, but was unable to convert.

The lights around the ground had been turned on since three quarter time, but it was Rokewood-Corindhap’s lights which were switched off when the final siren sounded.

It was shattering for Rokewood-Corindhap after such a positive year, as it looked likely to at least make its first grand final in six years.

But no-one can take the win away from Skipton, who once again proved finals experience counts for a lot.

GOALS: Skipton: Tim McKay 2, Kiernan Molloy, Graeme Lench 1. Rokewood-Corindhap: James McNamee, Tom Blackford, Gerard Watt 1.
