Rokewood-Corindhap may not have ended Illabarook’s finals chance, but must have shown the Bulldogs just how far they are from winning their first RegionalOne Lexton Plains Football League flag.
The Grasshoppers won by 71 points, 15.17 (107) to 4.12 (36), taking control from the opening siren. Illabarook would have been expecting a better performance, but had no answer to the run and skill of the Grasshoppers. Two goals in just three quarters is not finals material, as Illabarook wound back the clock to its dark era a few years ago. Gerard Steenhuis returned to the team Saturday to boot two goals, but there were too few avenues to goal in the slippery conditions. Rokewood-Corindhap used the dry ball in the first half to perfection, having the job done by the time the rain fell during half time. Shane Boyington reveled in the conditions kicking four goals, as did coach James McNamee. The Grasshoppers go into the final round fully prepared for what lies ahead. GOALS: Rokewood-Corindhap: Shane Boyington, James McNamee 4. Illabarook: Gerard Steenhuis 2. BEST: Rokewood-Corindhap: Leigh Russell, Shane Boyington, Tom Blackford. Illabarook: Beau Ketchen, Brian Lovison, Brad Vagg. Navarre scored an important percentage boosting win over Ararat Eagles, but the Grasshoppers hopes of a finals berth still hinges on their final round match against Lexton. The Grasshoppers 15.13 (103) to 5.11 (41) victory places them perfectly for its final round clash with Lexton to help determine the finalists for 2008. Navarre again showed its liking for its home ground, but to succeed in finals the Grasshoppers must show good form away from its comfort zone. Wayne Driscoll continued his revival with six Navarre goals, David Lang and Louis Hannett were in the best. Ararat Eagles Brent Bulger booted two majors. The Eagles go into their last game against Rokewood-Corindhap, not the sort of match to go into the summer off. GOALS: Navarre Wayne Driscoll 6, Nathan Ringin 2. Ararat Eagles: Brent Bulger 2. BEST: Navarre: David Lang, Louis Hannett, Ben Crichton. Ararat Eagles: Craig Cooper, Sam O’Connell, Simon Alexander. Lexton goes into its final round match with no form and probably little confidence, after suffering another big loss, this time to Skipton. The Tigers did not give up all day, but were never in contention finally losing by 66 points, 8.8 (56) to 17.20 (122). The difference in scoring shots was indicative of the contest, Skipton having 21 more shots on goal. Coach Tim McKay scored eight goals, but it was Graeme Lench on half back which set the Emus toward their 150th win. As if the loss was not enough, Lexton also lost one of its favourite sons, Hugh Briody during the game to a chest injury. Briody was taken by ambulance to hospital for observation. Eamon Johnson and Lloyd Bennett were again best for a deflating Lexton. GOALS: Skipton: Tim McKay 8, Kiernan Molloy 3. Lexton: Eamon Johnson 3, Trent Brown 2. BEST: Skipton: Graeme Lench, Tim McKay, Steven Lodge. Lexton: Mark Smith, Lloyd Bennett, Eamon Johnson. Carngham-Linton had another predictable win, this time 45 points over Natte-Bealiba, 21.11 (137) to 14.8 (92). Jake Pring (six goals) continued his current form for the Saints, while Travis Grigg got in line for goals with four, alongside Jarrod Burt. Seven goals to the Swans Jamie Evans was a bright return, as was five for Chris Jardine, but was not enough to secure an upset win. Carngham-Linton did take some time to shake Natte-Bealiba, but gained control from quarter time on to also score its 150th LPFL win. GOALS: Carngham-Linton: Jake Pring 6, Travis Grigg, Jarrod Burt 4. Natte-Bealiba: Jamie Evans 7, Chris Jardine 5. BEST: Carngham-Linton: James Templeton, Jake Pring, Travis Grigg. Natte-Bealiba: Jamie Evans, Chris Jardine, Brendan Berlund. Next weeks game between Lexton and Navarre will determine who makes the finals and who will have to wait another year. If Navarre wins, Navarre and Illabarook make it while Lexton misses. If Lexton wins, and Illabarook loses, it will come down to percentage between Navarre and Illabarook. If Illabarook wins, the Bulldogs make it and the winner of the Navarre/Lexton game also makes it. Heaven forbid if a draw is included. Next weeks games: (Final round) Ararat Eagles v Rokewood-Corindhap Illabarook v Carngham-Linton Lexton v Navarre Natte-Bealiba v Skipton By Rhys Brehaut |
