Roos come from behind to topple Bombers Print E-mail
{mosimage)Heyfield and Boisdale fought out the match of the round, eight points separating the two sides at the quarter time siren before the Bombers stamped their authority on the match.

Booting five goals to two in the second quarter the momentum was with Boisdale as the Bombers built on their quarter time lead.

Finding David Berry tight against the goal posts Ben Carr’s kick into the forward line was pin point accurate as Berry slotted through his first.

The Roos responded with the next two through Mark Stevens and Nathan Wellins before the Bombers broke the drought scoring the final four for the term, 10.7 (67) to 6.2 (38).

Andrew Lambie and Trent Anderson led a crackerjack defence that strangled the Bombers after half time.

Heyfield played with rebounding momentum, kicking five goals in the third quarter and six in the last in an all-conquering second half display against this season’s biggest improver Boisdale.

The Bombers were brave and adventurous, especially early, before Heyfield’s ruck supremacy triggered a run of all-important centre clearances Jordon McDonald and Luke Conway running rampant in the middle of the ground.

The crowd came to a standstill in the middle of the third quarter when Heyfield club stalwart Aaron Duffy was stretchered off after a heavy blow which resulted in the Bombers being one man down after Carr was yellow carded off.

The incident sparked much emotion and lifted the intensity of the Roos, but it robbed them of one of their most reliable defenders.

Kept quiet early Mitch Dowse, like the Roos, lifted.  Their midfield were on top in the third quarter and by the end of the term they had a bounce in their step as they reeled a 29 point deficit back to one point at the final change 11.7 (73) to 11.6 (72)

The Roos led the charge early in the final term Mark Stevens making no mistake as he put the home side in front for the first time since the opening quarter.

They had their second for the term in as many minutes as Luke Conway and Mitch Dowse combined in the middle of the ground.

Mitch Dowse running hard off his opponent, as he bounced the ball goal ward to score.

The game was in the balance with the Bombers yet to add to their one goal after half time.

Heyfield’s defence held strong as Boisdale came at them, before the game was stopped Heyfield’s captain Andrew Stevens stretched from the ground with a suspected ankle injury the Roos bench down to one.

The rain began to fall as both sides worked hard to move the ball along the wing to their advantage.  Consecutive throw ins on the boundary consumed valuable time for the Bombers, before they broke free to register their first for the term.

The Bombers defence struggled to clear the half back line, as the Roos forwards pressured Boisdales defenders into mistakes.

William Kelly burst free from the pack in the middle of the ground to run towards goal, his kick landing in the hands of best on ground Lyell Berry in front of goals his kick one of two missed opportunities.

Boisdale moved the ball slowly forward from the kick in before Luke Conway and Mitch Dowse once again got Heyfield out of trouble as they regained possession to set up team mate Jeff Warren who slotted through the sealer.

Creating enough of a buffer to keep the Bombers out, the Roos were given a fright as the Bombers scored three late term goals John Saunders putting through the first.

It was short lived as Mitch Dowse and Nathan Wellins rattled the Boisdale engine room forcing the error to provide Berry with his fourth shot at goal for the term.

It was followed by Berry’s fourth goal, the Roo at the tail end of an impressive passage of play Mitch Dowse running from half back taking three bounces before setting up the waiting Berry in front of goals.

The Roos courageous 11 goal to four second half sealing the reigning premiers victory 17.10 (112) to 14.8 (92).

Berry the pick of the goal kickers booting four, while Mitch Dowse finished the match with three majors two coming late in the final term.

For the visitors coach Andrew Gieschen booted four, while Mark Stevens and Michael Tait were named among the Bombers best.

Ladder leaders the Tigers went hunting against Cowwarr in the first three quarters before taking the foot off the pedal to be held goalless in the final term.

Gormandale blew the game apart in the first half booting 10 goals to one in the wet conditions as they put the result beyond the Saints reach.

The home side added a further five goals to one in the third before being well held as the Saints won the honors in the final term booting three goals.

Gormandale’s midfield Shayne Simpson and Bobby Pacunskis were among the sides best while Daniel Domaille, Wayne Henry and Steve Hazelman scored three apiece.

Seasoned youngster Shane Morgan led from the front for the Saints while Marcus Pilgrim and Kevin Hood made valuable contributions.

Woodside rallied to put in a solid opening half effort against TTU before the Bombers ran away with a 47 point win after the main break.

Scoring 2.2(15) to 4.9 (33) after the long change proved costly for the Wildcats as the Bombers built on their handy buffer at the first two changes to run claim their fifth win of the season.

Mark Engley stood up in the forward line kicking three for the visitors while Damien Kerr was the leading goal scorer for the Wildcats finishing with three.

Glengarry laid the foundation for its 12.12 (84) to 10.7 (67) win over Rosedale with a four goal to two second quarter.

The match was an even affair both sides battled hard in a see-sawing first quarter as they made the most of their early opportunities in front of goal.

It was the Magpies that held the upper hand at quarter time, Glengarry taking a mere one point break into the change.

The home side carried the ascendancy into the second quarter putting together a solid term which saw them break away to a two goal lead.

The two sides contested an even third quarter, the Blues winning the term as they looked to eat away at the Magpies half time lead.

Nine points favored Glengarry at the final break as both sides contested a hard hitting final term, with the Blues playing to keep their slim finals hopes alive.

It wasn’t enough to get Rosedale over the line with the second placed Magpies holding on in a classic contest.

Glengarry’s Rory Jennings and Ryan Wissmer were in match winning form, the Magpies finishing the match with 10 individual goal kickers.

Rosedale’s challenge on the score board was led by Brad Caldwell and Ben Macreadie who finished the day with three a piece, while Joe Caldwell and Macreadie were named among the best.

Churchill elevated their percentage following their 180 point demolition of Stratford.

Hitting the ground running from the first bounce the Cougars added nine majors in the opening term, before five in the second and another nine in the third quarter.

The visitors displaying why they are a premiership contender as they flexed their goal kicking muscle against a lesser ranked opponent 32.12 (204) to 3.6 (24).

Nathan McDonald added six to his season tally of 62, McDonald one of 13 goal scorers for Churchill.

Chris Johnson and defender Travis Brighton collected the votes for their dominating performances for Churchill while Ben Channing and Tyson Bush were shining lights in a dark day for the Swans.
