AFLcountry thumbHerald Sun | AS hard as it might be selecting a “best of” country team for the AFL era, or the last 25 years, deciding the criteria presented more headaches.

Just what constitutes a country upbringing? Corey Enright from the tiny South Australian township of Kimba in the Eyre Peninsula was clear-cut, but what of Bendigo’s Greg Williams, St Kilda’s Tony Lockett from Ballarat or Wayne Carey and Paul Kelly of Wagga Wagga.

So a call was made and basically any player from a city of 30,000 residents was deemed ineligible, meaning Matthew Richardson from Devonport (25,000) makes the cut but Harry Taylor from Geraldton (35,000) doesn’t.

The most glowing exception in this team (which would win this year’s premiership or any other by 10 goals minimum) is the absence of Lake Grace boy Nat Fyfe who has twice been voted AFL MVP and last year won the Brownlow Medal.

He has a strong case to be named the best player in the game for the past two years and has now produced a six-year body of work that will surely take him to AFL Hall of Fame entry in years to come.

But who should he be in ahead of? That is always the question you have to ask when demanding the inclusion of a player in the team that is the best from the bush.
