STRATFORD overcame a fightback from Paynesville to win 14.9 (93) to 12.11 (83) in round 14 of East Gippsland football.
The Swans jumped out of the blocks at AJ Freeman Reserve, booting six goals to two in the first term before the Gulls tightened up, Stratford taking a 17-point advantage at the long break following an even second term.
The Gulls showed why they could be a threat come September in the third term, booting five goals to two to hit the front, but the Swans were up to the challenge, booting four goals to two in the final term to keep the Gulls at bay.
Josh Kiss and Kieran O'Dwyer booted three goals each for the Swans, while Liam Lemon with three majors and Jack Bacon with two goals were elusive across half-forward.
Sam Noone returned to his best, dominating the air and drifting forward to kick two goals in a best afield effort. With the Swans missing Michael Walker, Josh Tollner proved to be a handy inclusion, while Lewis Bolton and Nick French won their fair share of ball.
Gavin Bickery provided rebound from half back, while Lachie Heywood was also good in defence.
Keith Ritchie led the scoring for the Gulls with four majors, while Aaron Cameron and Daniel Gaunt each booted three goals. Ryan Holland, Damian Ashcroft, Daniel Hayes and the Bairnsdale listed Jason Waddell were among the better players.
Tigers pushing for top two
WY Yung kept its hopes of a top two finish alive with victory over rival Lindenow, 12.11 (83) to 9.10 (64).
The Tigers led all day but the determined Cats were always in the contest.
Mark Sellings and Thomas Smith booted three goals each for Wy Yung, while Daniel Zammit, Will Hamilton and Darby McCallum set up chances for them further afield.
Darren Allen led the way for the Cats with three majors. Paul Gould, David Donchi and Myles Mitchell impressed, while veteran Peter Jenner was solid in defence.
Blow for Seagulls
LUCKNOW put a dent in Lakes Entrance's finals aspirations, winning 15.8 (98) to 12.11 (83) in an upset.
The Magpies held the edge for the majority of the contest, with a five goal to four final term providing an entertaining finish.
Shaun Ryan and Ryan Halford each booted three goals for the Magpies, while Brent Isles, Gary Jones and Luke Bates continued their good form.
Ben Crittenden stood up to boot three goals for the Seagulls, while Michael Battista, Adam Walker and Jarrod Matthews were among the better players.
ORBOST-Snowy Rovers had the bye.
