wang roversBorder Mail | OUTGOING Wangaratta Rovers coach Paul Maher says he’d like to see the club appoint a playing coach from outside the club.

The Hawks are currently searching for a replacement for Maher, who will coach his final game against Albury at the W.J. Findlay Oval on Saturday.

“Personally I’d like to see someone from outside,” Maher said.

“Maybe you need somebody every now and then with a fresh look.

“There’s great benefits in having locals who know the young blokes.

“We’ve got a very young playing list so I think there’s an opportunity to get great value out of a playing coach.”

After a long and successful career as a thirds coach at the Rovers, Maher has coached the club’s senior team for the past two seasons.

The Hawks made the second week of finals last year, but have won just three games this year after a host of summer departures.

“My highlight has been watching the young guys develop into senior footballers,” Maher said.

“I’ve enjoyed taking an interest in their lives out of footy.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my eight years coaching at the club.

“It’s time to let somebody new come in and see what they can do with the boys.”

Maher has blooded several youngsters this season, with left-footed defender Michael McKenzie the latest to make his debut.

With matches against Albury, Lavington, Wodonga Raiders and North Albury in their past four rounds, it’s been a difficult finish to the season for the Rovers.
