myrtlefordBorder Mail |MYRTLEFORD defender Hamish Leahy looks set to put a frustrating start to the season behind him by playing his first match of the season against Wangaratta Rovers at W.J. Findlay Oval on Saturday.

In a huge boost to the Alpine Saints' big-man stocks, Leahy will return after injuring his Achilles early in the pre-season.

Football manager Scott Burgess said every precaution had been taken in the centre half-back's recovery.

"He's a quality player and it will be good to have him back," Burgess said.

"He did it early on and getting a six-foot four player into the side will be handy, especially with the Sharp boys playing for the Murray Bushrangers."

Ruckman Matt Dussin, who starred against Lavington last round in his first match of the season, is also expected to play against the Rovers after being free of work commitments in Melbourne.

The Alpine Saints have also allayed fears about the future of small forward Willie Thorne after he applied for a clearance to return to the Great Northern Football League last week.

"He had always planned to go back home for a week when we had the bye," Burgess said.

"Willie's right to play."
