Alberton FLWeekly Times | ALBERTON league surprise packet Stony Creek is on the verge of breaking a significant club record.

The Lions recorded their eighth win on the trot on Saturday, humbling Toora 12.17 (89) to 6.8 (44).

Club president Steve Martin said Stony Creek had never posted more than 10 straight wins. If all goes to plan against Allies and Kilcunda-Bass over the next two weeks, it will attempt to make club history against Foster in Round 11.

The Lions’ dominant start to the year follows a disappointing campaign last season, when they finished ninth with six wins and 10 losses.

Stony Creek coach Chris Day said the recruiting department was largely responsible for the club’s change in fortune.

“In a first game against the reigning premiers (Phillip Island), we had 10 new players in the seniors,” he said.

Day said prize recruit Andrew Logan had been a standout in defence since arriving from South East league club Rythdale-Officer-Cardinia.

Premiership players Adam Myhal, Justin Shields and Kane Wille have also returned.

Day also cited the club’s “favourable” draw this season, which matched it against fellow flag contenders Phillip Island and Dalyston only once.

“Once we beat Phillip Island we sort of looked at the draw and said ‘we could be 10 and zip at Round 10’,” he said.
