nyoraWeekly Times |NYORA has saluted one of its stalwarts with its first win for the season in the Ellinbank and District Football League season on Saturday.

Matt Layton’s 350th senior/reserves game for the Saints provided extra incentive for the side, which downed Catani in a Round 12 thriller by four points on Saturday.

Catani failed to capitalise in front of goal in the final term, kicking 2.5 to go down 10.10 (70) to 11.8 (74).

Nyora playing coach Scott Clark kicked seven goals.

Layton, 40, said the pressure the younger players applied in the final quarter was crucial to ensuring Catani did not get an easy shot on goal, but that the Saints “probably stole” the win.

In Round 11, Nyora led Longwarry by a goal going into the final term, but lost by 39 points.

“The win was great. They couldn’t have timed it better,” Layton said.

“We had a good first half against Longwarry the week before ... there was a good feeling going into (the Catani match), but it really could’ve gone either way.”
