goldriversWeekly Times | THE door is wide open for a premiership for the majority of Golden Rivers clubs, according to league operations manager David Alderuccio.

The league endured a turbulent off-season with a new board installed and one of its nine clubs, Wakool, going into recess.

But six rounds into the competition only two wins separate Ultima at the top of the ladder from Macorna in sixth, and the top five all have a percentage of more than 100.

Quambatook sits in seventh with one win, while Moulamein is win-less.

“It’s been pretty exciting. It’s been pretty consistent across the whole league,” Alderuccio said.

“I guess besides Moulamein and Quambatook — but Quambatook have picked up a couple of players of late which has made them a bit more competitive — to be honest, you could throw a blanket over six clubs to win it.

“The way the start of the season happened, from all reports Macorna and probably Hay were going to be the front runners but then they’ve dropped off the mark a bit.”

He pointed to Murrabit which had bounced back from losing two of its first three matches to win three on the trot, including a 48-point win against Wandella at the weekend, to sit in second place.

Alderuccio would not hazard a tip as to who would take out the flag this year.

“You’d have to say Ultima, based on its previous credentials ... but I personally believe its going to depend on the day,” he said.

A couple of other leagues have a tight top end of the ladder going into interleague byes this weekend.

Seven sides in the Central Highlands league have five wins after six rounds, and four in the Geelong and District league are tied on six wins.
