FORMER Essendon forward Jay Neagle has signed on as playing coach of Traralgon Tyers United next season.

Neagle, whose 28-game AFL career finished in 2010, joins the Bombers after playing for Eltham in the Northern Football League this year.

The 26-year-old spent last year with Korumburra-Bena in the Alberton league, helping the Bulldogs to a grand final.

Traralgon Tyers United president Andy Falla said Neagle’s appointment was exciting for the club.

“Jay brings enthusiasm and the experience of having played at the top level,” Falla said. “Hopefully he can bring across a few recruits for us as well.”

Neagle, the son of the late Essendon great Merv, will take the reins from outgoing coach Matt Stolarczyk, who did not have his contract renewed.

The Bombers were North Gippsland league finalists last year but slipped to ninth this season after recording only five wins.

“Matt reached the end of his contract and the club decided to move forward,” Falla said.

“It’s a very even competition and it’s not difficult to drop from the higher echelons of the ladder to down the bottom, so we’ll be looking to move up the ladder again quickly.”
