AFLcountry thumbWeekly Times |AFL Victoria will trial a salary cap to put a lid on the rising costs of country footballers. This follows revelations from earlier in the year that some country clubs are spending up to half a million dollars a season chasing premierships.

League administrators have agreed player payments have spiralled out of control.

AFL Victoria has been told the biggest spenders were generally suburban clubs but teams in high-profile country leagues can pay more than $300,000 a season.

Clubs have said they were forced to pay more because of the loss of population and the need to overcome travel barriers.

A working party was established by AFL Victoria to examine the escalating costs of player payments at a community level.

The working party today provided an update to football league leaders at a meeting in Healesville.

The proposal, which is still in the development stage, includes three major elements:
