Good things come in threes at Bruthen

By Gareth Trickey

OMEO AND DISTRICT: Bruthen will name not one, not two, but three teams of the century next Saturday.

Article first appeared: 21 July 2007   Herald Sun

The unusual step is in recognition of the three leagues the club has competed in over the past 122 years.

The club began in 1885 as one of a handful in the fledgling East Gippsland League.

Bruthen shifted to the larger Gippsland League in 1954 before settling in its current league, Omeo and District, in 1978.

Next Saturday's function will include a formal supper with speeches and music at the Bruthen Inn Hotel.

Meanwhile, the Omeo League will revert to 25-minute quarters today at the request of clubs.

The league shortened its games to 20-minute quarters plus time-on some years ago to allow players, coaches and spectators to travel home before dark.

But the social aspect of the game suffered from the early finish with few spectators meeting for post-game drinks and discussions.

Games will now comprise 25-minute quarters in the junior divisions and 25 minutes plus time-on in the seniors.

Top two do battle

BALLARAT NETBALL: Lake Wendouree takes on East Point in a top-of-the-table clash today at Wendouree Reserve.

Lake Wendouree is unbeaten this season while East Point is second on the ladder with two losses from 12 games.

East heads into today's match on the back of a 79-goal victory against last-placed Darley.

A win for East could put it a game clear of third-placed Melton.

Pigeons take on Tigers

OVENS AND MURRAY: AFL legend Ron Barassi is back on the road today for the WorkSafe Game of the Month.

Barassi will visit Yarrawonga for the match between the Pigeons and Albury Tigers at JC Lowe Oval.

The premiership coach and player will speak to fans at a pre-game lunch before being a guest at the match between second-placed Yarrawonga and fifth-ranked Albury.

Entertainment for the kids includes face painting and jumping castles.

Swan Hill celebrates

CENTRAL MURRAY: Former Fitzroy player Bill Storer and Geelong Grand Final team member Bill Ryan are among the big names to have pulled on a St Mary's Football Club jumper.

The Swan Hill junior club will honour its past greats and celebrate its 50th anniversary next Saturday with a family night at the Italian Social Club rooms.

St Mary's will play Swan Hill before the function.
