Dons to honour bushies

By Gareth Trickey

ESSENDON: Country football has long been viewed as a breeding ground for AFL stars.

Scott Lucas
Talking up Dons: Star forward Scott Lucas will be one of the guest speakers at the club's Boys from the Bush lunch.
Essendon Football Club will celebrate its country heritage on Thursday, August 16 with the Boys from the Bush lunch.

The club will pay tribute to the rugged bush character of players like Tim Watson, Ian "Bluey" Shelton and the Daniher brothers.

Dick Reynolds Club chairman Bruce Heymanson said Essendon had been lucky to get some very good footballers out of the Wimmera Mallee during the VFL's old zoning days.

"The lunch is not only about celebrating champion footballers, it's about celebrating country people who are champion people," he said.

The Boys from the Bush lunch will be held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel Ballroom with Essendon's Scott Lucas and John Barnes among the guest speakers.

Tatyoon runs hot

MININERA AND DISTRICT: The wolves are gathering at the door of the Tatyoon Football Club.

The Hawks lead the Mininera league this season with a winning streak that extends back to Round 12 last year.

But the run to the finals could ruffle a few feathers at the Hawks' nest.

Tatyoon plays fourth-placed Glenthompson Dunkeld today, followed by an away game against last-placed Woorndoo Mortlake in Round 17.

But the club's biggest test comes in the last game of the season when the Hawks face an improving Penshurst at home.

Penshurst defeated Glenthompson Dunkeld last week and needs a succession of wins to sneak into the finals.

Can Tatyoon finish the season undefeated? All will be revealed in three weeks' time.

Moama's losing streak

MURRAY: A visit from a mystery streaker in the final seconds of last Saturday's seniors game capped a big weekend for the Moama Football Club.

The Magpies also welcomed back former president, trainer, recruiting officer and life member Nick Eddy, who spent last year on the sidelines battling cancer.

The 61-year-old overcame the disease late last year and climbed back into the timekeeper's box for last Saturday's loss to Rumbalara.

Moama celebrated Eddy's 50 years of service to the club with post-game drinks.

The identity of the male streaker remains a mystery.

Ellinbank celebrates

ELLINBANK AND DISTRICT: More than 40 years of country football will come together at Ellinbank Football Club tonight.

The club will hold a Teams of the Decade dinner to announce representative sides from the 1990s, '80s, '70s, '60s and pre-1960s.

Ellinbank has won nine premierships over the past 40 years and 17 since its inception in the 1920s.

Players selected in each of the teams will be given mementos to mark the occasion.
