Yarrawonga finds flag form

By Gareth Trickey

OVENS and Murray premier Yarrawonga reignited its flag hopes with an 81-point win against Corowa Rutherglen yesterday.

Article first appeared: Herald Sun August 13 2007

Yarrawonga held a three-goal lead at quarter-time, but an 11-goal haul in the second quarter put the game out of Corowa's reach.

Craig Ednie bagged five goals for Yarrawonga and teammate Timothy Hargreaves kicked four.

League leader Wangaratta flexed its premiership muscle on Saturday with a 44-point victory against Albury.

Second-placed Yarrawonga plays third-ranked North Albury next Saturday at North Albury in the second-last round. Yarrawonga and Wangaratta go head-to-head in the final round of the season.

NIRRANDA abandoned its last game of the Warrnambool and District season after rain flooded the Nirranda Recreational Reserve on Saturday.

Central umpires agreed to cancel the senior game between the home side and Old Collegians because of a deep pool of water at one end of the ground.

Nirranda finished the season in last place while Old Collegians were ninth.

Premier Merrivale holds second spot on the Warrnambool and District ladder after it suffered a 50-point loss to sixth-placed Russell's Creek, 11.8 (74) to 3.6 (24).

Merrivale will play third-placed South Rovers in next week's qualifying final.

Timboon capped off a solid season with a seven-goal victory against fourth-ranked Kolora-Noorat, 10.10 (70) to 4.4 (28).

The league leader earned a week's break for its top-of-the-table finish.

Kolora-Noorat takes on fifth-placed Allansford in Sunday's elimination final.
