Carngham-Linton has put a dent in Navarre’s chance of a top three finish in the RegionalOne Lexton Plains Football League. The Saints won a rain soaked match by ten points, 8.7 (55) to 6.9 (45) at Navarre on Saturday.
They put Navarre under pressure from the word go, kicking with the wind and piling on 4.2, a good score under the conditions, to a single behind.
Navarre came out with the wind in the second period to get right back in the game, but allowed its opposition to kick what proved to be two important goals.
Playing catch up football against a team as strong as Carngham-Linton eventually took its toll on Navarre in the final term.
The Grasshoppers could not use the wind in the final quarter, with the rain having picked up appreciably, and the ball rain sodden.
Carngham-Linton, due to percentage, dropped a spot to third, but is in the box seat to finish with the double chance.
Jarrod Burt kicked three Saints goals, and Clint Ladiges showed his value to the team in just his second match for the year.
Sam Robertson kicked two goals to take his tally to 53, but it was not enough for a Navarre victory.
Ararat Eagles have reignited their slim chance of a finals berth with an upset 57 point win over Illabarook at Ararat.
It was not only the victory that was largely unexpected, but the ease it was done.
Ararat kicked 8.17 (65), but it was the performance, or lack of, by Illabarook that was the real shock.
The Bulldogs could manage just eight behinds for the entire afternoons work.
It is the first time they have been held goalless in the LPFL.
The Eagles did the job without the services of Callum McElgunn, Dylan Lesock, and Craig Cooper, all late withdrawals.
They now find themselves once again a game outside the top five, but with tough games coming up, the chance of a final spot is still remote.
Skipton has recorded a solid 57 point win over a competitive Lexton, 14.13 (97) to 5.10 (40).
The Tigers took the game right up to the undefeated ladder leaders for two terms, but a scoreless second period was the killer.
Skipton had more avenues up forward, which is their strength.
Vaughn Dunstan was best, while 300 game defender Rod Kennedy kicked a goal – his first for over four years.
No Lexton player kicked more than one major, with coach Eamon Johnson, named best, certainly taking some positives from the game.
Rokewood-Corindhap took care off Natte-Bealiba, with a 48 point win, to reclaim second spot.
Six first term goals set the win up, though the Swans responded with five of their own in the second term.
But they could add no more majors for the remainder of the game.
Xavier Ryan (four goals) and Jason Hutchins got the Grasshoppers season back on track, with Steven Quinn (two goals) one of the best for Natte-Bealiba.
