North Gippsland FLGormandale had a chance to close the door on the top five of North Gippsland Football Netball League on Saturday but failed to make the most of their chances.

The Tigers kept with the competitions number one ranked side HEYFIELD in the opening term before the Kangaroos hit their straps to open the game up at half time.

It wasn’t pretty football after the long change, the Tigers booting seven majors in the second half four of which came in the final term where they outscored Heyfield.

A scrappy opening term saw the Tigers contain the home side who failed to capitalise on their opportunities in front of goals in the first stanza.

The Kangaroos opened proceedings their first coming through veteran Brett Szabo before Luke Conway registered Heyfield’s second.

An errant kick from the backline by Andrew Lambie saw Gormandale with their first.  The stray kick marked by Daniel Domaille on the forward 50, Domaille’s kick hitting the chest of the leading Steve Burgess.

A snap round the body by Brendan Solomon saw the Tigers add their second, Heyfield defenders Justin Cox and Trent Anderson unable to drag down the goal sneak down.

Play concentrated in the visitors forward 50 before the Kangaroos drew forward with ease to slot through their third.

Heyfield’s prime movers were up and about early, Nick Dowse, Stuart Anderson, Joel Dinsdale and David Kelly who kept close check on Domaille.

Efficient use of the footy from one half back to another, saw Dinsdale burst from the 50 metre line to score.
Heyfield scoring either side of the quarter time break.

Burgess had his second as the Tigers continued to stay in reach before Szabo responded for the Kangaroos, his dominance in the forward line stretching the Tigers defence.

Gormandale peppered away at the sticks, three missed opportunities in succession proving costly.

Wayne Knight set the crowd alive taking a screamer over the pack, before Szabo strolled into goal.

Aaron Duffy registered Heyfield’s fourth for the term as the Kangaroos threatened to break the game open prior to half time.

A snap at goal kept the Tigers within reach, before Jake Shingles stretched the home sides lead back out to 22 points at half time 4.7 (31) to 8.6 (54).

Led by Szabo in front of goals Heyfield added five majors to three for the term as the home side kicked away on the scoreboard in the third.

It wasn’t pretty football both sides making their fair share of mistakes, Gormandale had plenty of the play but weren’t able to make the most of their opportunities.  The side’s younger tier of player struggling against the more experienced Kangaroo campaigners.

Two goals on the run in the final term set the impetus of the final term.  The Tigers stringing together some impressive passages in the fourth which saw the side outscore Heyfield on the scoreboard.
