ALBERTON League club Stony Creek staged the upset of year in thumping Wonthaggi Power by 82 points on Saturday. It was Wonthaggi's first loss since the 2007 grand final.
Stony Creek, which has not tasted finals action since 2004 or a premiership since 1983, sits undefeated atop the ladder after six rounds.
Five goals from Justin Shields helped Stony Creek over the line.
"I guess you could say I expected we could win but it was totally unexpected to win by that much," Stony Creek coach Leigh McQuillan said.
"All the jobs we set up for the players, all the tags we put on, all the structures we put in place just came off."
South Bendigo romped to a 92-point win against Castlemaine yesterday to maintain second place in the Bendigo League. Dayne Frew was the chief destroyer with four goals for the victors.
Geelong League premier St Mary's got its season back on track with a dogged 17-point win against St Joseph's, while Maffra prevailed in the West Gippsland/Latrobe Valley League derby with a 52-point win against premier Sale.
Six goals to former Carlton forward Luke Livingston in a 64-point win against Tyntynder helped Kerang establish a two-game gap on the rest of the Central Murray competition.
Peter Riccardi kicked four goals as Bannockburn went to the top of the Geelong and District League with a 89-point win against North Geelong.
And former Richmond midfielder Chris Hyde kicked two goals as Albury downed Yarrawonga by 13 points in the top-of-the-table battle in Ovens and Murray League.
