Lots of fire in Ovens and Murray league

Ovens & Murray FLTHE Ovens and Murray league overcame a raft of key withdrawals to defeat the Goulburn Valley league by 47 points in their interleague showdown.

Despite losing former AFL players Chris Hyde, Michael Stevens and Jon McCormick in the lead-up, Ovens and Murray coach Robbie Jackson was adamant pre-game his charges could avenge a one-point loss to Goulburn Valley last year.

"It was fantastic by us, we had 22 contributors across the ground, everyone chipped in and did their bit and it made for a great result," Jackson said.

"We made a point of getting off to a really good start. To be five goals in front at quarter-time was really pleasing.

"And in a set-up such as this we needed to put all of our individual goals aside to play good team footy and they did that today."

Adam Cook and David Clark both kicked five goals for Ovens and Murray, while Paul Newman kicked seven goals for Goulburn Valley.

On Saturday, Horsham Saints captain Gavin Kelm kicked 10 goals to lead the Wimmera league to a 20.12 (132) to 9.13 (67) win over the Western Border league.

Bendigo upset Ballarat 21.12 (138) to 16.21 (117) with Brady Herdman and Tyrone Downie each kicking four goals.

The Yarra Valley Mountain District league made up for a heartbreaking loss to the Bellarine League two years ago with a 67-point victory.

Nicholas Coughlin and Michael Faulkhead kicked 15 goals between them in Sunraysia's 111-point win against the North Central league.
