THE VCFL has received widespread support for its revamp of interleague football from next year. The Herald Sun revealed on August 1 that the bi-annual country championships, played under a round-robin format, would be abandoned in favour of an annual one-off interleague clash.
Leagues will be ranked, based loosely on the results of the last country championships in 2007, with leagues moving up or down each year depending on the result of their one-off interleague match.
In the Herald Sun survey, 75 per cent of presidents who responded said they would prefer a one-off or annual rivalry clash as opposed to a round-robin competition.
There was lukewarm support for the introduction of regional all-star matches.
Just 44 per cent of country club presidents supported the idea, but one president in favour of the concept was Bunyip's Alan Wright.
"There are too many great players not being recognised for their playing ability," Wright said.
"This lets them show their abilities at the highest possible level."
