Geelong, Peninsula Stingrays & Sunraysia are the 2011 Champions of the V/Line Cup
The 2011 V/Line Cup has been successfully staged with Geelong, Peninsula Stingrays and Sunraysia crowned champions of the three divisions of the Carnival.
29 matches were played over five days by the best Under 15 footballers from country regions of Victoria and the border country.
High quality football was exhibited by all teams over the Carnival despite tough conditions for play on Tuesday and Wednesday. In a cruel irony, the V/Line Cup was moved to the April school holidays in part to guarantee better playing conditions - what was seen however was some extremely wet conditions fortunately played on excellent surfaces at Highgate, Coburg, Melbourne University and Preston City Ovals.
In what was history repeating itself, all three champions of the 2011 V/Line Cup went back to back from last year's event.
In Division 1, Geelong played Ovens and Murray in the Grand Final at Preston City Oval. The contest was extremely tight right up to the final siren with Geelong finishing up winners by just a goal despite a barrage of forward pressure from the O&M.
The Peninsula Stingrays continued excellent form across the Carnival to defeat the Central Murray by 7 goals in the Division 2 Grand Final. The Peninsula boys were focused throughout the entire carnival and their form in the final was too good for their opposition.
Sunraysia proved to be too good for South West in the Division 3 Grand Final to also go back to back as champion. Sunraysia got out to an early lead against the South West and were able to exert pressure across the ground throughout the rest of the game.
Big crowds were seen across the Carnival with many families making the journey to Melbourne for the last two days of the Carnival, and also at the start of the V/Line Cup attending the Regional Rounds in Ballarat and Bendigo.
The 2011 Team of the Carnival will be released early next week.
