Barnawartha spearhead Peter Cook had a day to remember on the weekend kicking 23 goals. He wrote himself into country footy folklore on Saturday with an astonishing haul of 23 goals for the Tigers in their 260-point demolition of Wodonga Saints.
In what can only be described as the best individual performance in the VCFL this season, Cook bettered the Tigers' previous record of 22 goals and had league officials and historians scrambling for the record books.
Cook, who now leads the VCFL goalkicking charts with 60 majors from just seven games, described his performance at Martin Park as near-perfect.
"To be honest I didn't do a lot wrong," he said.
"The delivery from the boys was great and the guys who played on me were just unlucky.
"I mean, there's not much they could do as a defender when I'm getting hit lace out every time.
"It was good to finally kick straight to be honest, I think I kicked 9 goals 8 against Tallangatta the other week so to kick 23 goals 5 was pleasing."
Reg Webb's haul of 31 goals for Granya against an undermanned Kiewa in the late 1940s is believed to be the only better goalkicking effort in the Tallangatta league since it's reformation in 1945.
Cook kicked seven goals in a blistering first quarter and had 12 by half-time.
Five third-quarter majors had his haul at 17 at the final change, with a six-goal effort in the final term taking his match tally to 23.
Coach Danny De Marte described Cook's game as the best individual performance he had ever seen.
"Without a doubt, it was pretty unbelievable," De Marte said.
"He didn't do it the easy way either, a lot of his goals weren't the standard mark from 30 out and kick a set shot.
"He snapped goals, he kicked them over his head, he was basically unstoppable.
"He was generally battling against a couple of players all game but he just has that ability to kick goals from anywhere."
