Ardmona full-forward Perry Meka, the 40-year-old who played in the Legends game at Whitten Oval last month, will be represented by former AFL players’ advocate Iain Findlay when he appeals against a six-match ban in Shepparton on Thursday.
Meka was the subject of investigation after an incident following a recent match between Ardmona and Kyabram and District Football League rival Avenel at Avenel. He was charged with unbecoming conduct and faced the Kyabram and District league’s tribunal behind closed doors last weekend.
Although Kyabram league general manager Greg Watson would reveal only that Meka was suspended for a total of six matches, it is believed he was rubbed out for four matches for striking two spectators during an altercation after the siren and another two matches for misleading the tribunal.
Meka, who last week kicked seven goals in Ardmona’s 129-point victory over Nagambie to bring his season tally to 90, requested a stay of sanction to enable him to play against lowly Merrigum today, but was denied. Ardmona is second on the ladder, a game behind Stanhope.
Another country footballer who was rubbed out after an investigation, Shepparton Swans ruckman Jarrod Sutherland, will continue his campaign to return to fitness during the Swans’ match at home against Goulburn Valley league rival Euroa today. The match promises plenty, with the Swans third and Euroa fourth.
Sutherland returned two weeks ago after completing an eight-match ban for his part in an incident behind the play against Echuca early in the season. Last week, he kicked one goal in the Swans’ narrow 10-point loss to dual reigning premier Seymour.
Swans treasurer Michael Moroney said that, despite the loss, the club was not planning to go to court to appeal against the loss of points for victories in rounds two and three, when VFL club Port Melbourne claimed that Swans defender Tim Looby was its player. Looby was the Swans’ best player in the loss to Seymour.
Swans officials were not unhappy with the loss considering their team was missing 11 players though injury. Midfielder Brett Warburton and half-back Heath Bardon are certain to return today, while centre half-back David May is hoping to return from a knee injury that has sidelined him for most of the season.
Deakin Reserve co-tenants Shepparton and Shepparton United will play a derby match tomorrow. United is on top of the ladder, a game clear of Seymour.
Nathalia full-forward Brendon Parker today has the chance to notch his third consecutive ton with his hometown club when the undefeated Purples host Murray league rival Mulwala, which is second on the ladder. Parker, 36, has 93 goals this season.
Since starting at Nathalia, the burly forward has played at Tongala in the Goulburn Valley league and Newtown-Chilwell in the Geelong league. In 1992 and ’93, he played five senior games at Carlton.
His return to his original club has coincided with Nathalia’s premiership run. The Purples won the 2005 and ’06 premierships and must go close again this year.
Osborne, which is on top of the ladder in NSW’s Hume league, will tonight celebrate another milestone for its remarkable mainstay Garry O’Connell when it holds a dinner in its clubrooms to honour O’Connell’s 25th year as the Cats’ president.
O’Connell, 80, has served on the Osborne committee for more than 60 years. The Cats today travel to the Murray River to play Howlong, which is behind Osborne only by percentage.
Osborne midfielder Shayne Weidemann, the brother of former Adelaide defender Wayne Weidemann, is returning from injury. Howlong full-forward Shaun Myles, who has 95 goals, will be going for his century.
Adam Grant, a midfielder from Heathcote and District league club Elmore, has been named captain of the Victorian Country District Leagues representative team that will play South Australian Country tomorrow at Stawell.
The South Australian captain is Simon Pedler, a ruckman from Great Flinders league club Cummins Ramblers, who played in Port Adelaide’s 1996 SANFL premiership team.
