The pleasantries are over, now it is time for the finals action to begin.
Last Saturday saw the final home and away round in the Lexton Plains Football League.
Top team Skipton completed its lead up with what turned out an easy 72 point win over Lexton. Only 18 points separated the two at half time, but it was all the Emus after the main break. Kiernan Molloy kicked three goals, as eight other players contributed to the goal tally.
Matt Shortal booted half of Lexton’s goals, as the Tigers could only manage 4.2 (26) to 14.14 (98).
Rokewood-Corindhap overcame a disappointing Carngham-Linton by 31 points. The Grasshoppers led at the last change by 44 points, but slowed the engine down, as Carngham-Linton scored the last three goals, the first time for the day the Saints scored consecutive goals. Carl Matheson with three and youngster Dylan Bourke did excellent jobs for Rokewood-Corindhap, while Carngham-Linton has few winners. Ross waters also booted three goals, and Robbie Greenbank was named best in the 12.17 (89) to 8.10 (58) score line.
Natte-Bealiba and Illabarook played a closely fought match with Natte-Bealiba coming out on top by 21 points, 14.15 (99) to 12.6 (78). The Bulldogs, who had already beaten the Swans twice during the year, just fell short, but will go into the finals with a lot of self-belief. An impressive third term put Illabarook right back into contention, but the class of Natte-Bealiba shone through in the end. Castlemaine recruit Kerian Robinson with three goals and Leigh Berlund were the stars, while Illabarook’s Ryan Dunstan (three goals) and Beau Ketchen played well.
Two teams ending their season played a close match, with Navarre coming out on top by 13 points. Ararat Eagles, who last won two years ago to the round, led by three, five and four points at each break, but could not hang on to record a win. Navarre veteran Wayne Driscoll booted three goals, and Dave Heenan was a good contributor. The Eagles Brent Bulger, Laurie Moyle and Richard O’Connell each finished with two goals. Final scores: 11.8 (74) to 8.13 (61).
