Weekly Wrap | Undoubtedly the biggest story to come out of country football action this week was the feat of former Fremantle Docker and current Violet Town FC forward, Josh Mellington, who was the first senior Victorian country footballer to reach 100 goals for the season.
What made this more amazing was that coming into the weekend’s round 9 Kyabram and District FNL clash against Tallygaroopna, he was sitting on 74 goals for the season.
After kicking 13 goals to half time, the 100 tally seemed within reach and then with 19 at ¾ time it was only a matter of when, not if, he would kick the 26 required. Just to be sure, Mellington kicked 27 to end up on 101 goals for the season after just 9 rounds. His total of 27 goals also ranks 25th on the all time list of biggest individual hauls of goals in Victorian senior country footy.
Whilst Violet Town ended the day on 36.15 231 to be 212 point winners over Tallygaroopna, the biggest score and winning margin for the weekend belonged to Lindenow FNC from the East Gippsland FNL who kicked 39.24 258 to run out 251 point winners over Paynesville FNC. Despite this big win, the wet and cold weekend meant there were plenty of close games, especially in the Outer East FNL Premier Division where their round saw all 4 closely contested games decided by a total of 33 points, including a draw between Cranbourne and Woori Yallock. This was one of 3 draws for the weekend.
In the Geelong and District FNL, second placed Bannockburn FNC drew with 6th placed Geelong West Giants, whilst in the Goulburn Valley FNL, Mooroopna FNC, who lost by a point for the second time this season last weekend, drew with Rochester FNC. Rochester did have the chance to win the game, but a missed kick for goal after the siren only managed to tie the scores.
It was a good week for country clubs who were chasing their first win for the season. Ultima FNC from the Golden Rivers FNL, Tyabb from the MPNFL, Cowwarr FNC in the North Gippsland FNL and Wandin in the Outer East FNL all saluted for the first time in season 2021. Rennie FNC in the Picola and District FNL kicked a mammoth 34.12-216 to break through for their first win over Blighty FNC who only managed 2.3 15. At the other end of the ladder, Frankston YCW suffered their first loss for 2021, losing to rivals Frankston Bombers by 25 points in the MPNFL.
Finally outside of the 27 goal effort from Josh Mellington, 6 other players managed double figure goal tallies, including a haul of 15 by Bridgewater’s Joshua Martyn in the Loddon Valley FNL, a bag of 14 by Jason Wells from Longwarry in the Ellinbank & District FNL and a haul of 13 from Rennie FNC’s Chase Strawhorn, which also saw him bring up 50 goals for the year. On the overall Top 20 tally of goal kickers, Mellington sits comfortably on top with 101, followed by Anthony Zelencich from Carisbrook FNC in the Maryborough Castlemaine District FNL with 74 and in third place is Gene Robinson from Millicent FNC, in the Western Border FNL, with 72 so far for season 2021.
