Weekly Advertiser | A rise from wooden spooner to finals side remains a possibility for Pimpinio’s A Grade netball team after a five-goal win against Kaniva-Leeor United on Saturday.
The Tigers were made to work hard for their 49-44 win, finally shaking off a dogged Cougar side that closed to within a single goal at the final break after trailing by five at half time.
But Pimpinio held firm in a situation where it might last year have crumbled, re-establishing a five-goal buffer by the final whistle.
Goalies Mikayla Dumesny and Tahlia Thompson were Pimpinio’s keys to victory, converting their goal attempts at better than 76 per cent.
Thompson was especially accurate, netting 24 of her 30 shots for the game.
The pair’s accuracy was important, with Cougar captain Nikki Hawker playing a strong game of her own at the other end of the court and wing defence Lauren Brown making entry passes difficult for the Pimpinio midcourters.
The result put the Tigers in fifth place on the ladder, one spot ahead of perennial finalist Kalkee and trailing the fourth-placed Cougars by less than one percentage point.
But the Kees kept themselves in the thick of the finals’ race with a convincing 58-22 win against Swifts on Saturday.
