WODONGA Saints fell agonisingly short of victory for the second week straight when a Trent Castles-inspired Yackandandah clinched a two-point win at Yackandandah on Saturday.
After going down to Wahgunyah by four points last weekend, Terry Burgess’s charges endured more heartache after spraying several gettable shots in the final quarter.
Burgess later said the loss was a bitter pill to swallow.
“The club hasn’t been in these situations for a long time and we just didn’t take chances,” Burgess said.
“It’s disappointing, but all you can do is look ahead and get on with it.
“Every time Trent Castles touched the ball, he did something with it and we just have to learn from the game.”
Castles, who went into the clash with 15 majors, was the difference between the teams with eight goals, despite close attention from Saints’ backman Josh Lieschke.
James Davies and Sam Witherow also played well.
Wodonga Saints were best served by ruckman Craig Jarvis, while Steven Church provided plenty of drive from defence and Ryan Jenkins looked dangerous in attack.
“We are improving but need to finish off games,” Burgess said.
“It’s hurt us, the past two weeks.”
Thurgoona brushed aside Wahgunyah by 65 points.
The Bulldogs made the running early with Matt Bain enjoying his best match of the season, while Sam Field and Todd Miller were the main destroyers in attack.
Mitta United hammered Beechworth by 82 points.
