New Magpie, Tyler Jones, managed to kick 11 goals for his side against Nathalia in the Murray Football League match on saturday.
The signing of Tyler Jones looks like being one of the best of the season for Moama after the forward booted 11 goals during his side’s 62-point win against Nathalia on Saturday.
Jones leapt to the top of the Murray Football League goal-kicking list with the haul as the Magpies secured their third win in four matches.
The home side kicked 6.4 in each of its first two quarters and led by 61 points at the long break, before effectively breaking even with the Purples in the second half to win 19.12(126) to 9.10(64).
The total was Moama’s highest score since round 15 in 2011 and its highest at Moama since August 2010, almost three years ago.
Moama coach Simon Maddox said Jones had a ‘‘sensational’’ performance, dominating the game in the first half.
‘‘He marked everything and had seven or eight goals up to half-time,’’ he said.
‘‘(Nathalia) had to take their ruckman and play him back.’’
Maddox said the forward earned his shots with many strong marks, but he was also influential at ground level, winning a couple of holding-the-ball decisions.
‘‘He had a really good day,’’ the coach said.
The Magpies kicked with the wind in the opening term and matched their performance in the second quarter, effectively winning the game by half-time and the coach said he was ‘‘really happy’’ with the team’s effort in the first half.
‘‘We played well in the first half when the game was there to be won,’’ Maddox said.
‘‘The third quarter was reasonably even as (Nathalia) came out breathing a bit of fire.
‘‘They played pretty well in the second half and if they had kicked more accurately the final score would have been a lot closer.’’
The coach also praised the games of David Ismail and midfielder Daniel Thorp, saying ‘‘10 or 12’’ other players could have featured on the vote cards.
It is the second week in a row Ismail has played a defensive role on a small forward and his adapting to the new role has benefited the team.
‘‘He’s going really well and can either play an attacking role off half-back, or he can tailor his game and play a defensive role,’’ Maddox said.
‘‘It’s working really well for us at the moment.’’
The team recorded no new injuries and looks forward to Tocumwal in round six.
■Moama’s reserves team bounced back from last week’s loss with a solid victory against the Purples.
The Magpies trailed by four points at the first break but fought back to lead by 14 at half-time.
The team went on to make sure of the result, winning 9.10(64) to 6.3(39).
