Shepparton Swans picked up their first win of the season in the Goulburn Valley Football League under-18s, ending Seymour’s undefeated record on Saturday.

A windy Princess Park made life difficult for both sides and the game degenerated into a bit of a slog, but the Swans showed the battling qualities necessary to pick up their first four points of the season.

The Swans started quickly, taking a 20-point lead into quarter-time and extending that lead to 29 points by half-time, prompting a stirring fight back from the Lions.

Seymour managed to cut the lead to within three goals by three-quarter time and continued its impressive performance into the fourth quarter, managing to hit the lead with four minutes to go.

With a first win of the season slipping away from them, the Swans battled back to hit the front in the final minutes.

Swans coach Scott Greig was delighted with his side’s performance and hoped that his young team would take a lot of heart from the win.

‘‘We’ve come off playing three very good teams in Mooroopna, Shepparton and United and the experience we’ve picked up in those games held us in good stead,’’ Greig said.

‘‘We’re working towards putting 80 minutes of good footy together and I think we put together a good 50-60 on Saturday, so there’s still plenty of improvement to come.

‘‘We’re a young team and mostly new, only four boys have stayed down from last year, so hopefully they take a lot of confidence from this.’’

Seymour coach Matthew O’Sullivan said he felt his side started the game slowly, but he could take some positives from the game.

‘‘I’m not too stressed,’’ O’Sullivan said.

‘‘We put our best available side on the park and it wasn’t good enough on the day.

‘‘Tim Dundon played well at centre half-back and Harry McLean and Jordan Hockley were both very fierce.’’

There was some bad news for the Swans with injuries suffered by Jeremy Kildey and Aidan Marr, with Marr suffering a broken jaw.

Kyabram dealt out a 99-point defeat to Mansfield and Euroa defeated Mooroopna by 46 points to complete the split round.
