RICHMOND star Chris Newman knows Brendan Fevola better than most.

But even Newman, who was best man at Fevola’s wedding in 2005, is stuck for ideas as to how former teammate turned Albury co-coach Chris Hyde can stop the Yarrawonga ace on Saturday.

Fevola has booted 20 goals in his three games against the Tigers since joining Yarrawonga at the start of last year and again shapes as the Pigeons’ match-winner in this week’s blockbuster at J.C. Lowe Oval.

Newman, who was in Wodonga yesterday on a community visit with seven Richmond teammates, was fairly blunt when asked how the Ovens and Murray Tigers could stop Fevola’s influence on the game.

“You can’t,” Newman said with a laugh.

“I just wouldn’t turn up.”

The former Richmond captain, who wouldn’t rule out playing in the O and M once he retired, admitted he kept an eye on the Border’s premier football league.

Five of Newman’s former Richmond teammates will play in Saturday’s grand final re-match between the league’s only two unbeaten teams.

Hyde and Dean Polo will run out in Albury colours, while Craig Ednie and Kayne Pettifer will play significant roles for the Pigeons.

Brad Ottens, who spent seven seasons at Punt Road prior to winning three premierships at Geelong, will play his first game for Yarrawonga.

“I do keep a bit of an eye on it,” Newman said.

“I haven’t been up here to watch Fev yet, though.

“I might try and save it for finals time and come up and see him put on a clinic.

“I got drafted with Hydey and played quite a few years with him.

“He’s one of my good mates, as well, and has always been a country boy.

“I knew he’d come back and play in the country when he was done.

“Dean Polo’s the same.

“I’m sure he’s dominating.”

And Newman admitted he could be one of those players, some day.

“Obviously I’d have to weigh up where I’m at and when I finish,” he said.

“I’d be interested in playing with a few of the old teammates, that would be good if the opportunity presented itself, but we’ll see what happens.”
