Tocumwal Football Netball Club is considering a move to the Picola and District Football Netball League north-west division next season.
The club’s board will meet tonight to discuss the potential move.
The Bloods have struggled across all grades in recent years.
Its senior football team has won nine matches in the past three seasons after winning the 2009 Murray Football League premiership.
The team, which won last year’s wooden spoon, is winless in 2013.
The Riv contacted Tocumwal president Bob Bourke, who did not wish to comment.
MFL general manager Dale Norman said he had not heard of Tocumwal exploring the option of defecting.
‘‘It’s every club’s prerogative to explore its best options, whether it’s Echuca United or Tocumwal,’’ he said.
‘‘Clubs can do what’s in the best interest of the club and its members.’’
Norman said Tocumwal had worked hard off the field to ensure the growth of its juniors and had not considered the prospect of the club leaving the league.
‘‘They’ve struggled the last couple of years with their onfield performances and they’re lacking a little bit of town support,’’ he said.
‘‘If they can have a few positive results they can come out of the spiral.’’
Murray sits 10th on the AFL Victoria Country Championship rankings compared to Picola north-west’s 31st position.
Norman said he would support any club who wished to join the MFL but could not envisage that happening anytime soon.
‘‘It’s fairly stable across the board at this stage,’’ he said.
‘‘In the long term there could be a shortage of players for some clubs. In the very long term we’ll have to look at restructuring the area maybe.’’
