EVER wanted to play alongside a host of former AFL stars?

Thirty people will get that chance when Albury Sportsground plays host to a tribute game for Merv Neagle later this year.

The former Essendon star and Walla coach, who died tragically in a truck accident last August, will be honoured with a fund-raising game on Wednesday, August 21.

The match, to be played under lights, looks set to be littered with some of the best players to ever grace the game.

The teams, to be coached by Simon Madden and Tony Shaw, will feature the likes of Brendan Fevola, Doug Hawkins, Terry Daniher, Mark Harvey, Anthony Koutoufides and Peter “Spida” Everitt.

A few more big names are still to be confirmed.

Steve Edwards, who is organising and promoting the match, said there were plans to make it an annual state-of-origin, event.

All proceeds from this year’s match will go to the Neagle family.

“The family isn’t doing it too easy at the moment and I ran into Donna last year and we got talking about it,” Edwards said.

“Hopefully we can try to raise some money for them.

“The plan is to hopefully make it an annual event, with different charities as the years go on.”

It is hoped a handful of local clubs will provide some of their own legends for the match.

A place in one of the teams costs $500, which includes a DVD of the game, team photo and jumper, shorts and socks.

There will also be a ticket to a luncheon at Albury’s SS&A club.

The lunch will feature the same players as guest speakers and tickets for that cost $50.

There will be memorabilia auctioned off, with a two-course meal all inclusive.

Edwards is still looking for support, with short and jumper sponsorship options still available.

Any would-be sponsor will receive a table of 10 at the function and a signed jumper, as well as advertising for their sponsorship.

Edwards can be contacted about all of the above at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
