Renowned Moama Football Netball Club character Roy Payne was joined by more than 100 friends and family as the club’s new stand was named in his honour on Sunday.
Roy, who started playing for Moama in 1961, has been a regular fixture at the club for more than 50 years and has had stints as president, trainer and many other roles since he finished his on-field career as a premiership player and best and fairest winner.
One of Roy’s sons, John — who was named alongside Roy in the club’s team of the century — made the trip from the United Arab Emirates with his family for the occasion.
‘‘It’s a real honour for Roy,’’ John said.
‘‘At the same time, the football club has given a lot back.
‘‘Even after his football career ended he encouraged me to play.’’
Roy’s wife Alma has also been long associated with the club, as a member of the women’s committee.
