murray flThe six district footballers involved in the AFL Victoria Country squads against the Victorian Amateur Football Association enjoyed an exciting, but mixed series of results yesterday.

Echuca United’s Rowan and Farran Priest and Ryan Prendergast (emergency), as well as Moama’s Tyler Jones enjoyed a thrilling result for the Vic Country Two team as it defeated VAFA (Premier B to Division Four) 14.16(100) to 15.9(99).

The Vic Country team had a superb start to lead 55-28 at half-time, but the metro side came back hard to hit the lead by three points at the final break.

In a see-sawing last quarter, the country side prevailed in a thrilling finish by one point.

The Vic Country One side, which included Eagles coach Scott Beattie and key utility Guy Campbell, were also involved in a heartstopping finish but ended on the wrong side of the ledger as the VAFA premier side prevailed 11.16(82) to 11.13(79), with Kyabram and former Echuca player Tom Sheldon named in the best.

The home side had a slight advantage at every break, leading 31-28 at the first change and 52-44 at half-time.

VAFA extended the advantage to 69-59 by the final change and, despite the best efforts of Vic Country in the heavy conditions, were unable to snatch the win at the end.

■The under 19s AFL Victoria Country team lost to their VAFA counterparts in dramatic fashion, 7.13(55) to 5.21(51).

Vic Country captain Hamish Morcom (Golden Square) had the chance to win the game after the final siren, but could not find the middle of the sticks — something the team struggled with all day.
