League Review | Another gripping round of SS&A OM football has still left the finals race wide open and even perhaps the double chance door is ajar – bring on Round 18!
Wangaratta Rovers have moved into fourth position and win lose or draw look to have locked in an elimination final spot against either Myrtleford or Lavington. The equation is simple for the Saints – they defeat the Roos at Corowa in the final round, and they play finals. They currently hold a 15% advantage over Lavington. If they were to lose to the Roos, Lavington who play Raiders in the final round would then take fifth spot with a win at Birallee Park.
The big loser out of the round was no doubt Albury who’s star midfielder and coach Anthony Miles season ended with a bad ankle/foot injury in the last quarter. Miles one of the league’s most popular figures, left the ground on a stretcher two minutes into the final term and had surgery on Sunday to repair dislocations. It capped off a horror day of injuries for Albury with Michael Duncan straining a hamstring, while both Zac Bye and Alex Jones left the ground with knee injuries.
In a typical clash between the two rivals it was Yarrawonga kicking three goals in the final minutes to snatch victory by eight points. Nick Fothergill, Willie Wheeler, and Matt Holgate starred for Yarrawonga, while Jacob Conlan five goals and Riley Bice showed the value of recent VFL appearances with great games.
