Outside of guaranteeing his Kyabram side a second chance on Sunday, topping the table after 18 rounds of Goulburn Valley Football League does not carry much significance for David Williams.
If Sunday’s game against Benalla at Mooroopna goes the way he wants it to, they will be playing for a grand final spot a week later, not that Williams expects Luke Morgan’s Saints to follow his script.
‘‘They’re a really fast-lit side .
‘‘We’ve only played them the once, so we’ve only had that one real good look at them, but we’ve got the DVDs of their last few games, which we’ve been watching.’’
Williams highlighted Al Jacka and Morgan as two players his side would need to crack down on, while also suggesting James Martiniello had the potential to hurt his side.
‘‘They certainly have a lot of good players and you don’t finish second on the ladder by luck,’’ Williams said.
You could say the same for finishing first and good players certainly aren’t in short supply at Kyabram.
Throw in the returning trio of Josh Linton, Nick and Tom Holman and there is an absolute abundance of talent, and Saints coach Luke Morgan knows anything less than his side’s best will not be enough.
‘‘We had a good look at Kyabram (against Tatura on Saturday night) and there were a few key areas they executed really well,’’ Morgan said.
‘‘The way their forwards and midfielders were able to get into space behind the Tatura defence and the way their defence repelled a lot of inside-50s.’’
The Bombers defeated the Saints by 24 points in round nine, but Morgan said his side had since improved in the two areas where they were shown up — pressure and ball movement.
‘‘We’ve gathered more games under our belt as a team and gotten better in those areas,’’ Morgan said.
‘‘Finals footy is a whole different game, though, and it’s all about who can execute on the day.
‘‘This is a great opportunity to play finals and it’s exciting, the whole town is buzzing about playing finals footy.’’
Morgan said his side had exceeded all expectations in getting to where it had, but he expected the Saints to keep doing that.
‘‘They are an ambitious group and they’re not scared of any challenges,’’ he said.
With the likes of Tom Sheldon, Jason Morgan, Nathan Beck and Paul Newman, whose struggles with osteitis pubis could yet keep him out of the side, awaiting them on Sunday, the Saints won’t be allowed to be afraid.
