From the Border Mail
KAYNE Pettifer, who admits he broke contract, is free to play for Yarra- wonga tomorrow. The former Richmond livewire’s clearance wrangle with Montmorency has ended on the eve of the season with him cleared to play for the Pigeons against Wangaratta at Mulwala.
“It’s done, thank God,” Pettifer said.
“It’s been a bit of a painful process.
“I did say I’d stay for two years at Montmorency and I was on a two-year deal but we came to an agreement.
“Glenn Brear (Yarrawonga president) has been tremendous helping me sort this out.”
Pettifer, who kicked 132 goals in his 113-game AFL career, yesterday hit back at criticism from Montmorency president Damian Long in The Border Mail in January.
Long said the Magpies had “busted their arse off” to secure Pettifer a job and licenses and accused him of chasing a flag.
“He had his views and I had mine,” Pettifer said.
“It wasn’t all correct what he said.
“I just needed to do what’s right for me.
“The guys I went to play with have all left.”
Pettifer, who said his motivation to play at Yarrawonga was to play with close mate Craig Ednie, said he had been surprised by the club’s professionalism.
“They’ve got a very solid game plan and Chris Kennedy and Drew Barnes lead well,” he said.
“All the boys have made me feel welcome.
“I like my fishing and shooting, so I’m sure I’ll fit in well.”
Pettifer expects to start forward in tomorrow’s Easter Sunday clash at Mulwala.
He is likely to push into the midfield at times.
