Border Mail |BARNAWARTHA officials have asked the Tallangatta and District league to open an investigation into an incident that left defender Danny Demarte with up to 30 facial fractures.
Demarte was involved in an off the ball clash during the first quarter with Chiltern recruit Brad Hibberson in the Tigers opening round clash on April 11 and underwent surgery the following Monday.
He suffered a fractured cheekbone, eye socket and nose alongside multiple fractures to the surrounding areas.
Demarte had a metal plate alongside mesh inserted into his face and spent several days in hospital after the surgery.
The matter was referred to the league's investigation officer, Enzo Bevacqua, on Friday.
He has 21 working days to complete his investigation.
Bevacqua will speak to players, coaches and club officials before presenting the league with his findings.
Barnawartha has submitted a $500 application fee for the probe.
Demarte, 34, is in the twilight of his career and has represented the league on many occasions.
