geelongamateur spotlightGeelong Advertiser |GEELONG Amateur's fifth-straight win has come at a price with star goalkicker Mitch Day facing time on the sidelines after injuring his hamstring in Saturday's victory over a dogged Queenscliff.

The undermanned Ammos side clinched the 31-point win in trying conditions after Day broke down in the first half and other injuries piled up.

The former Lara spearhead went off early but returned to the field in the second term to kick his 50th goal for the season and gave off a look-away handball to set up teammate Riley Mattner for another.

But by this stage, Day's trademark leads were being cut short and the Ammos' trainers decided he should call it a day at the main break.

"Daisy (Day) was pretty sore, so he sat out the second half," Geelong Amateur coach Rowan McSparron said.

"We'll look into that one over the next few days. It also wasn't convenient for us when Andy McLean copped a heavy knock early or when Tim Clark and Ben Lavars both suffered a corky.

"But at least these guys were able to play on.

"So after half-time we didn't really have a bench, we were just pinching out of what we had left.

"But these things happen in footy and we just tried to cover it as best as we could."

The Ammos had a tardy opening quarter and didn't take the lead until McSparron snapped truly at the start of the second quarter.

"I just didn't think we were first for the footy (and) Queenscliff were attacking much harder than us," the coach said.

"They were using it better coming forward and we just weren't taking advantage when we were using the ball in our hand.
"We were sloppy in that (first) quarter but when you think about it, I reckon we were sloppy all day, so that's something to work on."

After duelling with his former St Joseph's teammate Alex Simpson, Ammos recruit Peter Street made a big impression on the forward line where he marked and converted from the goal square twice in the space of a minute.
