Geelong Advertiser | HAAMI Williams isn’t one to gloat about personal achievements but the local footy great admits he will look back fondly on his appointment as coach of Belmont Lions’ Team of the Half Century when he steps away from the game.
“For me, footy is a ‘here and now’ thing, so I’m not one to look back on what I’ve done and bask in the glory of past history,” Williams said.
“But it is nice to receive such an honour.”
Williams, currently coaching Modewarre, was lauded at a gala dinner on Saturday night that marked 50 years of Belmont Lions, East Belmont and St Bernards.
Rod Dubbeldam, who won multiple best and fairests during the 1980s, was named captain of the team, while Brian Coughlan was made team manager.
Williams won the league and club best and fairest in the Lions’ premiership year of 2007 as a 35-year-old.
“It was nice to catch up with a lot of my premiership teammates and the past players who were around in that era,” Williams said.
“In 2007 we won it and in 2008 three-quarters of our side left,” he said.
“They were content with their flag.”
Williams, Chris Canavan, Luke Mahoney, Kristian Jeffrey, Sean Gallagher, Scott Pickett and Bowen Anderson were members of the 2007 team that made the side of the last 50 years.
