IT WASN’T the most convincing of wins, but Edenhope-Apsley downed Pimpinio by 23 points at Edenhope on Saturday to sneak back into the top five.
The game remained close for three quarters until the Saints pulled away with three goals to none in the final term.
It was a low-scoring contest, with a combined total of just 15 goals kicked for the afternoon.
Both teams lamented missed opportunities.
Pimpinio coach Mathew Everett said his team let an opportunity for a win go begging.
‘‘It’s inconsistency late in games that has cost us,’’ he said.
‘‘Pressure is something we talked about, because when it is as good as it can be, we’re as physical as most sides going around.
‘‘We only played one and a half quarters of decent footy, and it cost us.’’
Brothers Shannon and Daniel Baker drew praise from Everett.
‘‘If everyone played with the passion and consistency of those two, we’d be 7-2 right now instead of 2-7,’’ he said.
Edenhope-Apsley coach Grant Coxon said taking Daniel out of the play was one of the keys for his side in the second half.
‘‘He was intercepting the ball a lot, so we put our forwards down deep to drag him out of the play, and it worked reasonably well,’’ he said.
‘‘We controlled the game for about 70 per cent of it and I think our fitness got them in the end.’’
Midfielder Dave McLeish was good, but Coxon praised the team’s younger players such as Grant Cother, Lachie Middleton, Gavin Smith and Robbie Wall for standing up in big moments
