The Standard | TIMBOON Demons co-coach Norm Vogels wants his men to learn a lesson from the opponent they conquered on Saturday, Panmure.
The Demons posted their best win of the Warrnambool and District league season with an upset 17.13 (115) to 9.5 (59) triumph against the Bulldogs.
Grant “Goose” Mitchell kicked five goals as the hosts added 12.6 to 1.2 in the middle two terms to run away with the contest in front of their home fans.
The result came seven days after the Bulldogs scored a one-point triumph against Kolora-Noorat, a match bound to go down as the pick of the season.
But their inability to back up against the Demons prompted Vogels to caution his side against doing the same. Nirranda awaits them this weekend.
“We can’t just win one good game and put everything away. Hopefully we can follow it up and see what happens,” Vogels said.
“Everyone contributed today, which was excellent. Hopefully that happens again.”
Panmure led by three points at quarter-time but the match soon swung Timboon Demons’ way, emphatically so, with Mitchell at the heart of the surge.
“One-on-one he was taking marks and kicking goals, which is what you want your forwards to do,” Vogels said.
The Demons’ “sensational” back line — Brad Hallyburton, Sam Newey and Jeff Rosolin among them — and captain Ash Hunt also came in for praise.
Andrew Hargreaves, Tom Hunt (three goals) and big man Marcus Hickey, who played forward with Sam Doolan in the side, completed their best players.
“We’ve been working on a press and early on a couple of fellas got sucked to the ball, which opens you up,” Vogels said.
“Once we got some turn-overs we could lock the ball in our forward line.”
Panmure coach David Haynes said he was disappointed with the result, considering how well the Bulldogs played against the Power.
Haynes, who coached from the sidelines having tore the plantar fascia in a foot last round, said the Demons “played better footy than us”.
“The first quarter was even, after that they dominated. They played a really good press and forced us to kick under pressure,” he said.
“I’m pretty big on being accountable for what you do and the boys didn’t try hard enough.”
