anakieGeelong Advertiser | ANAKIE will be without captain Tom Parsons for the remainder of the GDFL season after he suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung in the Rd 12 game against Winchelsea.

Parsons had attempted a mark in the third quarter when he first felt a knock on the ribs, but continued playing.

Then, fifteen minutes into the last quarter, he copped another knock which forced him from the ground.

“Unfortunately what was already some damage there to the ribs has caused some sort of damage to the lungs,” Anakie coach Phil Gavin said.

“So there was some slight perforation of the lungs and he lost his ability to get his breath which is obviously quite scary for him and concerning for us.

“He ended up going off to hospital in an ambulance and he’s spent two or three days in hospital and won’t return to work until next week I’d imagine. What seemed like a pretty innocuous couple of incidents turned out to be quite scary.”

It is a bitter blow to Anakie, which also lost the experienced Gary Richert last month.

“To lose your captain is always difficult, but we lost Gary Richert the week before with a season-ending knee injury and a couple of guys with shoulders,” Gavin said.

“It’s probably top end talent we couldn’t afford to lose.”
