StJosephs fcGeelong Advertiser |ST JOSEPH’S coach Heath Jamieson says his team will not be getting carried away with Saturday’s demolition of cross-town rival and premiership contender Newtown & Chilwell.

Joeys put the Eagles to the sword in a one-sided contest at Elderslie Reserve, winning by 70 points.

“One thing we’re very mindful of is it’s a marathon, not sprint,” Jamieson said.

“We’re playing really good footy now but we’ve got to stay grounded and keep working hard, as boring as that may sound.

“We know it’s a long slog. One thing we are mindful of is the ladder is a good reflection of how your side is going and at the moment we’re playing good footy and it’s a matter of maintaining that.”

St Joseph’s held Newtown goal-less in the first, third and fourth terms and restricted it to only two majors for the match, while booting 14.8 for the afternoon.

“I think we were pretty good all day,” Jamieson said.

“For three quarters we kept them goal-less and that’s something I was rapt with. Newtown’s a good side and we know they’re only going to get better.

“I thought we didn’t allow them to play their game at all and our pressure was super.

“We know if we bring that pressure we’re going to be a hard side to beat. (Saturday) probably proved that.”

Both sides were missing key personnel and Jamieson expects the Eagles to be a formidable opponent come September.

“No doubt Newtown will improve and they were missing players that they will get back in the side,” Jamieson said.

“I know (Dane) McFarlane and Sandy Robinson were playing in the VFL and Dan O’Keefe didn’t play. Neither did (Dan) Measures, (Brant) Haintz, (Alex) Hickey for us.”

Joeys face another test this weekend, hosting third-placed Grovedale.

“That will be another big game for us, another game where we will get tested and we’re looking forward to the challenge,” Jamieson said.

“We want these challenges, we want to keep playing the better sides and pushing ourselves.”
