Torquay is still guaranteed the minor premiership, with only one round remaining, but the defeat shows they could again have a fight on their hands in the finals.
Seventh-placed Queenscliff also had surprising upset win over third-placed Barwon Heads by only three points at Howard Harmer Oval.
The Seagulls kept the Coutas goalless in the first quarter, but the tables turned in the second, with the Coutas kicking 6.3 to the Gulls 1.1.
